Junior Chefs
👉Activity description:
The activity consists of a cooking workshop in class. The students will learn how to prepare fun and healthy recipes that belong to the Anglo-Saxon culture such as:
- Oven free oatmeal cookies
- Mint chocolate energy balls
- Banana Split
-Yoghurt Parfait
The aim is to turn cooking into a highly original English immersion tool for them to internalise both vocabulary and expressions related to gastronomy while they live the experience of cooking.
🎨 Methodology:
The duration of the exercise is two hours. Students are divided into groups of 6 and each team is given a recipe in English. At the end, the jury (teachers) will decide who the winning team is and they will be able to decide the recipe for the next occasion, always taking into account that it must be of Anglo-Saxon origin and that it must be a cold food.
Each group will be asked to provide ingredients one week before the activity, and the teacher will bring the dishes to serve the meal. Below are the steps to follow for the proposed recipes:
Group 1: Oven free oatmeal cookies
Ingredients: 1 cup gluten-free rolled oats, 1/2 cup peanut butter, 1/2 cup brown rice syrup and chocolate chips.

🎯 Main goals:
The Junior Chefs activity has several aims:
- Helping the development of the pupils' fine motor skills.
- Assimilation of content: vocabulary about the elements of cooking, verbs and cooking instructions in the simple present tense and development of written comprehension.
- To introduce students to the gastronomic culture of the Anglo-Saxon language.
In addition, cooking is a fun and dynamic way of creating a motivating learning environment.

Hi Nereida,
ResponderEliminarFirst of all, thank you for sharing your blog with us.
I really liked this activity for several reasons:
- It made me hungry while reading,
- All the recipes are healthy, which means a lot nowadays because children should eat healthier to prevent obesity.
- The blog is very well organised;
- It's also very structured with specific goals and objectives.
In conclusion, well done! because you managed to bring together all the things that make it a successful activity, such as an excellent activity description, clear methodology, healthy ingredients with variety, main objectives and, most importantly, a very fun activity.
I wish you all the best,
Daniella Rodrigues.
Hi Nereida!
ResponderEliminarWhat a great idea to introduce cooking activities into the ESL classroom! I think that all 4 recipes are interesting and motivating and easy enough for young kids to carry them out. When people who give private english classes are stuck for ideas, it's often recommended that they include recipes and simple cooking activities, like you've done here. First, you can find the recipes with your students and talk about the ingredients and preparation needed and how you will actually cook the food item. Then, you can get to work and put it into practice, the result being a (hopefully!) delicious treat!
I personally did a workshop with infants on how to make parfaits, so I think it's a perfect activity that you've chosen. The kids were super motivated and had fun making their treats while listening to english being spoken.
Great ideas, Nereida!
Hello Nereida! I really liked this activity because it is an activity where students have an active role and it's a very funny way to work on food vocabulary. Furthermore, the fact that they work with English recipes is very interesting to work on the country's culture to create a context before working on vocabulary or grammatical structures. I also find interesting to use positive rewards, instead of punishing. Congratulations for the blog and for the activities you have create!
